This morning we toured Suzhou's No.1 Silk Factory. It is a factory-run museum and a fashion show that displays mulberry planting, silkworm raising, silk reeling, silk weaving, and silk quilt making. We learned that it takes several months to upwards of a full year to make silk rugs, clothing, and accessories in the factory (also reflected in all the price tags!). The highlight of this visit was the chance to hold a "live" silk worm! Go ahead....hold it Jenesa!
And, Jenesa had the chance to help stretch the silk to create a bed spread.
I'm not going to take the time to explain the process of how they produce silk....but it is something worthwhile to see the next time you visit China. We also had the opportunity to partake in a Mongolian BBQ for lunch while visiting the silk factory. They provide you with a long buffet area of meats (pork & beef), vegetables, salads, dressings, and breads. You pile everything you want into a large bowl and then take it to the cooking station. They take your bowl, dump it over a large cooking area, mash it up with a stick, and then return it to you in your bowl.
