This was supposed to be the highlight of our visit to Guilin. The Li River boasts spectacular landscapes and beautiful mountain peaks. The mountains are formed of limestone...giving them a distinct color and shape. OK...OK....so we got some nice pictures as we cruised on the Li River through southern China. Unfortunately, the river cruise kept going, and going, and going.....until 4 hours later we finally disembarked the boat. Try to understand....it's a little difficult to enjoy a four hour cruise seeing the same monotonous scenery with each passing mile in 100-degree heat! Phew!
We did see some wildlife....water buffalo everywhere! The locals actually tie some of these beasts up as pets and take them to the river for a swim! Another interesting site was several large birds sitting side-by-side....tied to logs in the river.....helping to assist the local fishermen. These birds would spot fish in the water and dive in to snatch the food for the fishermen....but they were leashed to the log so they couldn't fly away. Talk about smart fishermen!
